Añejo Ginger Snap

Añejo Ginger Snap

The Añejo Ginger Snap is our take on the classic tequila ginger cocktail: three ingredients, big flavor, real snap. SWOL Añejo brings oak and warmth, ginger syrup delivers a spicy backbone, and fresh lime keeps it bright and balanced. It is shaken and strained over fresh ice, so it drinks clean and cold with a slow ginger heat. Reach for it when a margarita feels too sweet and a mule too fizzy. Below is the exact build plus ways to dial the spice up or down.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 oz SWOL Añejo Tequila (the hero: aged and oaky, it stands up to ginger without disappearing)
  • 0.5 oz ginger syrup (or muddle fresh ginger with simple syrup for more heat)
  • 0.75 oz fresh lime juice (fresh only; it balances the ginger)
  • Garnish: lime wheel and optional candied ginger
HOW TO PREPARE
  1. Add SWOL Añejo, ginger syrup and lime juice to a shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake for 10 to 15 seconds until cold.
  3. Strain over fresh ice in a rocks glass.
  4. Garnish with a lime wheel and a piece of candied ginger.

Ginger syrup vs ginger ale vs ginger beer

These are not interchangeable. Ginger syrup is concentrated and non-carbonated, so it adds spice and body without diluting or fizzing, which is why this cocktail uses it. Ginger ale is sweet and lightly carbonated and turns the drink into a tall highball. Ginger beer is spicier and fizzier and is what makes a Mexican mule. If you want a mule instead, see the variation below.

Adjusting the spice level

For more heat, muddle two or three coins of fresh ginger with the syrup before shaking, or add a thin slice of jalapeño. For a milder drink, cut the ginger syrup to a quarter ounce and add a bar spoon of honey. Taste and adjust before straining.

Turn it into a tequila mule

Build the tequila, ginger syrup and lime over ice in a highball or copper mug, then top with 3 oz ginger beer for fizz. It is the same flavor family with more length and bubbles.

Mocktail and batch

For a mocktail, skip the tequila and top the ginger syrup and lime with soda water. To batch, combine tequila, ginger syrup and lime in a jar at a 2 to 0.5 to 0.75 ratio, chill, then shake and strain per glass over fresh ice.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a tequila ginger cocktail?

A tequila drink built on ginger, here SWOL Añejo shaken with ginger syrup and fresh lime.

Can I use ginger ale instead of ginger syrup?

You can, but it becomes a sweeter, fizzy highball rather than this clean sour.

How is this different from a Mexican mule?

A mule uses ginger beer for fizz; this uses ginger syrup for concentrated spice with no carbonation.

What tequila is best?

An Añejo like SWOL, because its oak holds up to strong ginger.

How do I make it spicier?

Muddle fresh ginger with the syrup or add a slice of jalapeño.

Is it served up or over ice?

Shaken, then strained over fresh ice in a rocks glass.

Can I make it without alcohol?
  • Yes. Use ginger syrup, lime and soda water for a ginger mocktail.

Añejo Ginger Snap TIPS

Fresh Ginger Kick & Balanced Zest

If you want an extra spicy ginger punch, muddle fresh ginger with simple syrup instead of using pre-made ginger syrup — it gives a brighter, fresher bite. When shaking, add a small pinch of salt to help round out the flavors and enhance the tequila’s natural warmth. For garnish, candied ginger on a skewer adds a tasty treat that complements the cocktail’s spice.
